Living in Blue Ridge, Georgia: A Buyers Guide
Blue Ridge is a well-known mountain town in Fannin County, Georgia, prized for its scenic downtown, lakefront recreation, and easy access to the North Georgia mountains. It has become one of the region’s more sought-after markets, with a range of upscale homes, cabins, and mountain properties.
Housing & Communities
Homes in the Blue Ridge area currently range from $234,900 to $5,869,700, reflecting everything from in-town properties to high-end custom mountain homes. As with Ellijay, Blue Ridge is a mountain town rather than a single planned community, so property styles and lot sizes vary considerably depending on location — from in-town lots to larger private mountain acreage.
Downtown Blue Ridge
Blue Ridge was founded in 1886 with the arrival of the railroad, and its downtown was historically promoted as the “Switzerland of the South” — a nod to its early tourism roots that still shows in its well-preserved, walkable historic core. Anchoring downtown is the historic Blue Ridge Depot, home to the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, along with Blue Ridge City Park, the restored 1937 Fannin County Courthouse (now home to the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association’s Art Center), and host to many parades and festivals.
The town has developed a genuinely artsy, food-and-drink-driven character. Craft breweries are a big part of the draw — Grumpy Old Men Brewing, Fannin Brewing Company, Tipping Point Brewing Co. (overlooking the city park from Trackside Station), and Angry Hops Brewing all call downtown home, several with live music on weekends.
The dining scene is equally strong: Black Sheep Bar & Grill, set in a converted historic home, Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar and Grill, a longtime local favorite, and The Boro Inn, an Irish pub with its own house beer, are among the standouts. Just outside downtown, Mercier Orchards — Georgia’s only orchard that grows, presses, ferments, and bottles its own products — adds a market, bakery, restaurant, and cider tasting room to the mix.
Outdoor Recreation
Lake Blue Ridge offers boating, fishing, and swimming, while the Toccoa River is a favorite for tubing and fly fishing. The Aska Adventure Area offers an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails just outside of downtown, popular with both residents and visitors.
Getting Around & Nearby Essentials

Who Lives in Blue Ridge
Blue Ridge draws a mix of generational families, full-time residents, second-home, and vacation-rental owners, retirees, and former visitors who fell for the town and stayed. Its strong tourism draw — downtown, the lake, the railway — means vacation and short-term rental ownership plays a bigger role here than in some of the surrounding, quieter mountain towns.
